The Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) is an internationally orientated university which is strongly embedded in the city of Rotterdam and her environment. From this strong commitment on her urban environment, the EUR is joining the academic world top within three fields, in specific areas, of expertise: Economics and Management; Medicine and Health; Law, Culture and Society.
'Act local, think global' is our adage: cosmopolitan Rotterdam with its metropolitan issues is our academic laboratory. Academic knowledge, developed here, is universally applicable.

Collection

In 1963, and on the initiative of Prof.mr. Piet Sanders (1912-2012), the Erasmus University collecting contemporary art of national and international artists. This in order to introduce students to the visual arts, and as a means of brightening up employees' offices and public areas of the university in an aesthetically responsible fashion. There was deliberately no preference for a particular art movement or trend, nor was there any attempt to acquire a collection that was intended to reflect every variant of graphic art. The only criterion was quality. This criterion is determined by artistic level, originality, art historical reference en technical execution. This is reflected in the visual development of the artist, the content, expressiveness, authenticity, cohesion in his work and context. Not only work of renowned artists is acquired, but also that of young, talented and promising artists. After 2000, not only graphics were acquired but the policy extended to forms of art such as photography, paintings and installations. Acquisitions spanning more than forty years have resulted in a rich collection in which many artistic movements from that period are represented; such as popart, op-art, constructivism, realism, surrealism and Junge Wilde. The collection is not established on an ad hoc base, but is determined by a special committee. This committee consists out of students, employees, and external advisors. Since the start of the collection the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen have acted as permanent advisory bodies.

Exposition space
With an average of four times a year, the Erasmus Gallery hosts exhibitions of artists of which work is, or will be, purchased. In addition, there are expositions which originate from the cooperation with other cultural institutions in, or around, Rotterdam, or with one of the Erasmus University's faculties. In the Erasmus Gallery there is a permanent exhibition of a part of the medal collection supported by a touchscreen display. The Art Route leads past 60 objects, indoors as well as outdoors, on different locations on campus.

Supporting
Students from the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam are designing a building fences for the building site on the campus. In addition, they will decorate the corridors from the bicycle park (2012-2013). To thanks the late Professor Piet Sanders (1912-2012) for his contributions to the Art collection from the Erasmus University, and for the occasion of his 100th anniversary, Art Affairs and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam jointly organized the exhibition ‘Piet Sanders: een leven met kunst’ (02 July – 19 October 2012).
